Bedford Audubon Announces Native Garden Workshop August 4th at Bylane Farm
Bedford Audubon’s native gardener and field biologist interns close out their summer with a Native Garden workshop in hopes of garnering interest to recruit new members. The workshop, to be held on Saturday, August 4th, will focus on native gardens with an emphasis on attracting native pollinators and bird species. Bedford Audubon’s interns this year are native gardener Megan Conway, an undergraduate at Shippensburg University majoring in Biology, and field biologist Patricia Rodrigues, who will be starting graduate school at Louisiana State University this fall.
The workshop will kick off with the interns presenting their Native Garden Talk, where they will discuss the ecological value of native plants and native plant pollinators as well as the destructiveness of invasive species. The talk will also include tips for making your garden attractive to a variety of pollinator and bird species. Following the Native Garden Talk, Megan will tour the Leon Levy Native Garden and give a demonstration on planting seeds, where participants will each get a chance to plant their own native seeds to take home.
After the demonstration Bedford Audubon will raffle off a native garden starter kit containing native seed packets, a homemade hummingbird feeder, bird-friendly coffee, and a book on starting native gardens. To close out the workshop, Megan and Patty will lead a walk around the Story Trail where they will help participants identify the common flora and fauna around Bylane Farm at 35 Todd Rd. People of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to come participate in the workshop and spend the day exploring The Hunt-Parker Sanctuary’s 5-mile trail network.
