Lecture: Bears in Our Backyards with Budd Veverka
You’re invited to our January 10 lecture (our monthly Second Wednesday Series) on Bears in Your Backyard: Are They Really Backyard Wildlife with Mianus River Gorge Preserve Manager & Biologist Budd Veverka.
Join Bedford Audubon and Budd Veverka for an in-depth look at a potential new arrival to backyards around our region, black bears. Budd’s long-time study of the species and first-hand experience along with his outgoing and personable nature will make this an enjoyable presentation.
- From walking your dog to feeding the birds, learn how to peacefully co-exist with these large charismatic mammals.
- Discover the research being conducted by Mianus River Gorge and their regional partners to map black bear occurrences and movements in Westchester, Putnam, and Fairfield Counties.
- Get an understanding of black bear biology and why black bears are moving into our area.
Budd Veverka is the Preserve Manager/Staff Biologist at Mianus River Gorge, Inc. He has a Bachelors in Wildlife from Unity College in Maine and a Masters in Biology from Eastern Kentucky University. Prior to working at Mianus, Budd worked as an Avian Research Biologist and Technician in West Virginia, Nebraska, Georgia, Kentucky, and Indiana, studying songbirds, gamebirds, raptors, and waterfowl. However, Budd’s passion is black bears, having experience with black bears and black bear research in Pennsylvania, Maine, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Indiana.
The program will be held in the Garden Room of the Katonah Village Library. Please join us for refreshments at 7pm, and the lecture begins at 7:30. No registration necessary– see you there!
(And please bring a reusable mug to reduce your ecological footprint.)

We had a great turn out last night! Thank you!
If you’d like to submit a bear sighting– location, date, time, and other details– to the Hudson to Housatonic Bears Project, you can do it one of three ways:
1. Email H2Hbears@gmail.com
2. Submit it to iNaturalist at https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/hudson-to-housatonic-bears.
3. Call the H2HBears hotline at 812.929.9970. If you have pressing questions about a bear you’ve seen, the most expedient way to reach Budd is by phone.
