Celebrating the Beauty and Diversity of Birds in our Region is a selection of bird photographs captured by Bedford Audubon members. The images in this series feature birds found in areas where Bedford Audubon leads bird walks, including here in northern Westchester County and the surrounding areas of New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey. Because birds are among the most seen examples of wildlife, people often overlook them or take them for granted. So, apart from showcasing the beauty of these birds, our objective is to create excitement about them so people will take notice and join in Bedford Audubon’s mission of protecting birds and their habitats.

The exhibit first opened in March, 2023, at the Katonah Village Library followed by a two-week run at Bylane Farm, Bedford Audubon’s headquarters. Due to overwhelming popularity, the exhibit is going on the road, opening it up to more people in the Bedford Audubon community and beyond!

The photographers whose works are featured range from true artists to hobbyists, but they have at least two things in common – they find joy in taking pictures of birds and they are Bedford Audubon members. And we couldn’t agree more with their spirit:

“I appreciate the opportunities Bedford Audubon provides to learn about birds… photographing [them] bridges my love for photography and exploring nature,” says photographer Troy Gorodess, who joined Bedford Audubon in 2021.

And new member Brian Willet said about photographing nature, “I hope that it also inspires our children’s generation to value and be good stewards of the world around them.”

A panel of three Bedford Audubon members, photo enthusiasts themselves, selected the images to be featured in the exhibit. They considered the technical quality and artistic merit of each photo, keeping in mind the theme of the exhibit to showcase the beauty and diversity of birds in our region.

Overall, this series provides an opportunity for people to see these feathered friends up close in all their glory through spectacular imagery. We hope it will bring more people into the Bedford Audubon community to discover these birds themselves and help protect them and their habitats.
