July Nature Almanac: What to Look for this Month

5            Look for the dark pink flowers of Swamp Milkweed in open wetlands. These flowers often attract wetland butterflies like the Mulberry Wing and Black Dash.

9        Full Moon.

15      Look for American Goldfinches gathering downy material from plants like thistles to build their nests. Goldfinches delay their nesting until there are enough seeds available to feed their young.

20      Many shorebirds and some songbirds, including Yellow Warblers and Louisiana Waterthrushes, migrating south already.

27‑30  Peak of Delta Aquariid meteor shower, best viewed in the wee hours of the morning before dawn.
