RE: Town of Bedford’s Climate Action Plan
The Bedford Audubon Society (BAS) supports the Town of
Bedford’s Climate Action Plan and its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions
in the Town by 20% by 2020. We encourage the Town Board to vote to include it as
part of the Town’s Comprehensive Plan.
BAS plans to play an active role in educating Bedford’s
families, students and officials about the Plan, particularly the following
recommendations:
- Retrofits for Residential Energy Efficiency—to produce a
total reduction in Community Emissions of 17%.
BAS filmed its energy audit and retrofit to show homeowners
how they can reduce their carbon footprint while saving money.
- Increase supply, Availability and Consumption of Local
Food—to reduce carbon emissions from food production which produces up to 30%
of US carbon emissions.
BAS’s bird-friendly vegetable gardens teach families to grow
their own vegetables without pesticides.
- Home Composting Initiatives—to keep 300 lbs. per
person/year of waste out of landfills.
BAS’s gardens at Bylane and Pound Ridge Elementary School
demonstrate how simple it is to compost food and yard waste.
- Landscaping using Native Plants to eliminate the need for
pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and gasoline powered equipment.
BAS’s native garden shows homeowners the ease and beauty of
native plants; BAS management plan for the John Jay Homestead lawns show how
to reduce lawn size.
Congratulations on the leadership you have shown on the
climate change issue.
Sincerely,
Jim Nordgren
